William Wallace Reid est né dans une famille d’artistes, le 5 avril 1891 à St Louis dans l’Etat du Missouri. À l’age de quatre ans, il fait quelques apparitions sur scène avec sa mère, Bertha Reid (née Westbrook), une actrice de théâtre. Son père, James Halleck Reid, est un célèbre dramaturge, qui deviendra acteur, scénariste et réalisateur sous le nom de Hal Reid. Wallace aimerai devenir chirurgien, il fait ses études à la Freehold Military School et à la Princeton University, où il excelle en musique et dans différents sports, notamment dans l’équipe de football.
Séduit par le cinéma naissant et passionné d’écriture et de réalisation, il change d’orientation et obtient sa première apparition à l’écran, en jeune reporter, dans «The Phoenix» (1910) pour la société Selig Polyscope de Chicago. Dès 1912, il travaille entre autres pour Vitagraph Studios où son père devenu cinéaste, engage son fiston dans quelques courts-métrages. Nous pouvons citer: le mari jaloux des attentions de sa femme envers son chien dans «Jean Intervenes»; un officier lors de la Guerre de Crimée dans un drame «The Victoria Cross»; un soldat qui déserte pour retrouver sa belle dans «Curfew shall not ring tonight». En 1913, alors qu’il travaille pour Universal, il rencontre l’actrice Dorothy Davenport, avec laquelle il se marie. Un fils, Wallace Jr, naît en 1917 et le couple adopte une fille Betty, en 1922.
En 1914, Wallace Reid écrit et réalise quelques comédies et joue avec son épouse notamment dans «A flash in the dark» il campe un mineur qui séduit la femme frivole d’un propriétaire d’une mine; dans «Heart of the hills» afin de trouver de l’argent pour opérer son frère estropié il intègre un gang. Sa carrière prend un nouveau tournant en travaillant avec les pionniers du cinéma muet. Pour David Wark Griffith, il intègre la superproduction «La naissance d’une nation» (1915). Il lui donne le rôle de Jeff le forgeron. Pour Cecil B. DeMille, il joue en covedette avec Geraldine Farrar dans plusieurs productions dramatiques, comme dans «Carmen» (1915) où il déserte pour rejoindre sa belle gitane mais celle-ci s’éprend d’un torero; dans «Jeanne d’Arc» (1916), il joue un officier anglais de la Première Guerre mondiale qui la veille d’une mission dangereuse est inspiré par une vision de Jeanne d’Arc, dont il revit l’histoire en devenant un commandant anglais qui livre la pucelle à ses bourreaux. Après avoir été le protagoniste d’une série de productions sur le thème des courses automobiles où il joue le casse-cou en faisant ses propres cascades, il retrouve Cecil B. DeMille qui lui offre l’un de ses meilleurs rôles, celui du mari volage de Gloria Swanson dans «Le cœur nous trompe» (1921).
En 1919, Wallace Reid est victime d’un accident de train transportant la société de production du western «La vallée des géants». L’acteur souffre d’une entaille au bras, d’une profonde lacération du crâne qui nécessite six points de suture et d’une entorse au dos. Traité à la morphine pour adoucir les douleurs, il en devient rapidement accroc, au point qu’en 1922, après s’être effondré sur le tournage de «Thirty days» de James Cruze, il est transporté dans un hôpital puis dans un sanatorium privé où il est placé dans une salle capitonnée pour se défaire de son accoutumance. Gravement affaibli, l’acteur développe rapidement une grave pneumonie et meurt dans les bras de son épouse Dorothy, le 18 janvier 1923, à l’âge de 31ans seulement.
