De son vrai nom Gunther Schneider, Edward Arnold est né à New-York le 18 février 1890. La stature imposante, le visage sévère et le nez busqué, il dégage une impression de puissance carnassière, qui lui vaut d’interpréter des patrons au cœur sec ou des personnages véreux, en délicatesse avec la loi.
Edward Arnold est d’abord connu pour avoir incarné le méchant dans une série de grands films de Frank Capra. Dans «Vous ne l’emporterez pas avec vous» (1938), il campe un banquier sans scrupule, qui veut acquérir la maison des Vanderhoff, des gens simples et unis. L’année suivante, il compose, dans «M. Smith au Sénat», un magnat de la presse corrompu qui, de mèche avec un sénateur sans états d’âme, Claude Rains, s’oppose au projet d’un jeune parlementaire candide, James Stewart, qui veut installer un camp de vacances sur un terrain convoité par les deux aigrefins. Dans «L’homme de la rue» (1941), il est encore un patron de journal aux dents longues, qui se sert de la popularité d’un autre (faux) naïf, John Doe, incarné par Gary Cooper, pour assouvir ses ambitions politiques. On le voit, des personnages bien souvent en marge de la loi, comme aussi ce Paul Madvig, boss du milieu et de la politique dans la première version de «La clé de verre» (1935), de Frank Tuttle ou cet Amory Stilham, convaincu de fraude et perdu de dettes dans «Madame Parkington» (1944), de Tay Garnett, avec Greer Garson.
Mais Edward Arnold a de la prestance et, comme il porte à ravir le costume trois pièces, on lui donne à jouer d’autres notables qui, ceux-là, se mettent au service de la société. Il est par exemple avocat, comme ce Daniel Webster qui, en plein prétoire, déboute le diable en personne dans «Tous les biens de la terre» (1940), de William Dieterle ou cet autre plaideur qui, dans «Traqué dans Chicago» (1952), périt assassiné. Fidèle au monde de la robe, il lui arrive aussi d’être juge, comme dans «Le fiancé de ma fiancée» (1947). Il tient aussi l’emploi du privé: ses rondeurs le destinaient à incarner Nero Wolf, le volumineux détective à l’orchidée de Rex Stout, dans «Meet Nero Wolf» (1936), mais il incarne, de façon plus inattendue, le détective aveugle Duncan McLain, imaginé par le romancier Baynard Kenderick dans «L’œil caché» (1945) de Richard Whorf. Il prend du galon et se hisse aux premiers rangs: il est ainsi le Louis XIII du «Richelieu» (1935) Rowland V. Lee, avec le grand comédien britannique George Arliss dans le rôle de l’Eminence et le grand vizir du très kitsch «Kismet» (1944), de William Dieterle, aux côtés de Marlene Dietrich. À noter aussi sa puissante interprétation du bâtisseur d’empire John Suter dans «L’or» (1935), de James Cruze, d’après Blaise Cendrars. Mais Edward Arnold peut aussi faire rire, en incarnant l’avocat fiscaliste et père sévère de «The youngest profession» (1942) de Edward Buzzell ou en tombant sous le charme de Margaret O’Brien dans «Three wise fools» (1946), du même réalisateur.
Dans les années 1950, Edward Arnold apparaît aussi sur le petit écran, dans des séries comme «The Eddy Cantor comedy theater», «Celebrity playhouse» ou «Strange stories», qu’il présente. Citoyen engagé, Edward Arnold soutient le parti républicain et envisage de se présenter aux élections sénatoriales. Marié trois fois, notamment à Harriet Marshall, dont il eut trois enfants, dont l’un, William, fit une courte carrière au cinéma sous le nom d’Edward Arnold Jr., Edward Arnold décède le 26 avril 1956 à Encino, en Californie, d’une hémorragie cérébrale. Il est enterré au «San Fernando Mission Cemetery».
