Ethel Clayton est née à Champain dans l’Illinois le 8 Novembre 1882. La jeune fille termine des études de philosophie (après le couvent!) lorsqu’elle fait ses débuts «pour s’amuser» dans un court-métrage en 1909 chaperonnée par son mari l’acteur Joseph Kaufman qui la laissera veuve en 1918. Je dois souligner pour être honnête que si certains journaux de l’époque firent mourir l’héroïque acteur au front, d’autres sources le laissent passer de vie à trépas au fond de son lit emporté par une mauvaise grippe. Quoi qu’il en soit, le destin va s’occuper de la très belle veuve.
Ethel Clayton se pique au jeu du cinéma et la caméra aime sa rayonnante beauté. Dès 1912 elle est à l’affiche de films et non des moindres. Des courts-métrages pour la «Lubin Manufacturing Company» réalisés principalement par Barry O’Neill et à partir de 1915 par son époux Joseph Kaufman, Travers Vale et Robert G. Vignola. En 1920 elle est engagée par la «Famous Players-Lasky Corporation» et devient l’une des principales stars du studio. Jusqu’à la fin du cinéma muet, elle est également dirigée par Tom Forman, Paul Powell, William Desmond Taylor, Wesley Ruggles, Donald Crisp et John Ford débutant dans la mise en scène. Elle se remarie avec l’acteur Ian Keith aussi célèbre qu’elle mais l’acteur est alcoolique et violent, le couple divorce en 1928, Keith accepte alors de suivre une sévère cure de désintoxication pour récupérer sa belle, le couple se remarie mais est à nouveau divorcé en 1931, Keith est repris par ses démons. Leur histoire ressemble à une répétition de celle de Elizabeth Taylor et Richard Burton, à l’époque Keith et Clayton sont aussi célèbres qu’ils le seront trente ans plus tard.
En 1931, Ethel Clayton est mêlée à un scandale qui fit grand bruit, une nouvelle affaire du «collier de la reine» mais de la reine des écrans cette fois. L’actrice a confié un collier de trois-cent-seize perles à son homme d’affaires, le bijou devant servir de garantie à une levée de fonds, mais le précieux bien disparaît. Sommé de le restituer par une cour de justice l’homme d’affaires avoue l’avoir engagé pour cent-vingt-cinq dollars, il en vaut vingt mille.
Hélas pour Ethel, son ramage est loin d’égaler son plumage et l’arrivée du cinéma parlant porte le coup de grâce fatal à une carrière pourtant déjà prestigieuse. Aimant son métier et ayant dépensé sans compter la fortune amassée aux temps bénis de la gloire, l’actrice reste à Hollywood et tourne jusqu’en 1948 de petits rôles parfois à la limite de la simple figuration. Elle apparaît, entre-autres, en aristocrate auprès de Bela Lugosi dans «L’ombre qui tue» (1933). Ethel Clayton est une passagère du bateau de «Âmes à la mer» (1937) avec Gary Cooper et George Raft, une femme qui choisit des parfums dans «Les flibustiers» (1937) de Cecil B. DeMille, une cliente de banque dans «Ambush» (1939) de Kurt Neumann et une infirmière dans «West Point widow» (1941) de Robert Siodmak.
L’actrice décède à l’hôpital St. John d’Oxnard en Californie, le 6 Juin 1966 (6/6/66)! complètement oubliée alors qu’elle a tourné presque deux-cents films mais n’est même plus créditée au générique la plupart du temps dès…1928! Ethel Clayton repose désormais au cimetière «Ivy Lawn Memorial Park» dans le comté californien de Ventura.
